During the height of the crypto craze in 2021, Coinbase users were taking screenshots of their portfolios or certain assets and sharing them online. The goal was to take advantage of this pre-existing behavior to create a branded moment.
This was a collaborative effort amongst myself, another visual designer, and a product designer. We started by going wide, exploring various data viz styles, color systems, and levels of “branded-ness”. At each weekly review, we would narrow down on these categories.
We faced a significant challenge in dealing with the vast possibilities of asset color combinations. Considerations of light mode vs dark mode as well as accessibility standards added another level of complexity. While it would be near impossible to catch every edge case, we analyzed user research data to identify commonly held assets and their typical quantities, guiding our final design.
